AESTHETIC UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY: POSSIBLE FUNCTIONAL COMPLICATIONS. LITERATURE REVIEW.
Introduction. The review is devoted to the issues of functional complications in patients undergoing upper blepharoplasty.
The aim of this study is to analyse the sources of literature concerning the issues of possible functional complications during aesthetic upper blepharoplasty.
Research strategy. The search for publications related to possible functional complications in aesthetic upper blepharoplasty was carried out in the indexed databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, as well as the e-Library databases. A bibliographic editor and the Mendeley extension were applied. We considered articles in English. The search depth is 10 years, but several sources (1975, 1985, 1995, 1998) were also included in this review because they contained conceptual (basic) information. The keywords for the search were the following: upper blepharoplasty; Asian blepharoplasty; functional complications; aesthetic eyelid surgery. A total of 183 literature sources were found, of which 50 publications were selected for further analysis.
Results. Complications after aesthetic eyelid surgery are divided into functional, aesthetic, or a combination of both. Postoperative functional problems resulting from aesthetic upper blepharoplasty include: orbital hemorrhage, keratopathy/dry eye, infection, eye irritation, lagophthalmos, chemosis, lacrimal gland injury, loss of vision, etc. Our efforts have been directed towards a detailed analysis of the currently available literature. Moreover, each problem in the article is revealed individually.
Conclusions. A detailed analysis of the functional complications encountered in upper blepharoplasty can help prevent the formation of adverse events and improve postoperative outcome, as well as patient satisfaction. An in-depth and close study of this topic will help improve the methods of perioperative management of patients after aesthetic upper blepharoplasty.
