DYSLIPIDEMIA AMONG ADULT POPULATIONS IN PAVLODAR REGION: A CROSS-CROSS STUDY
The study is aimed to assess the impact of smoking and other risk factors on dyslipidemia in residents of the Pavlodar region of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Materials and methods. A total of 1200 people took part in the cross-sectional study. The standardized and adapted STEPS questionnaire was used for the survey. The physical examination included measurements of height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP). Fasting venous blood samples were collected to assess levels of glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, creatinine.
Results. The results have shown that education ((22 = 7.6, p = 0.2) and ethnicity ((2 2 = 8.7, p = 0.1) do not affect the level of LDL-C. There is no relationship between the profession and the status of smoking ((22 =44.1, p=0.1). At the same time, married and widows/widowers had double (95% CI 1.45, 3.22) and almost four times (95% CI 1.19, 13.70) the odds for elevated LDL-C, respectively, compared with unmarried. Smoking has been shown to alter LDL-C levels. Those who smoked were 32% more likely to be at elevated LDL-C levels than those who did not smoke (95% CI 0.47; 0.98). Gender and marital status included in the model, did not disturb this relationship (95% CI 0.47–0.95).
Conclusion. The formation of dyslipidemia in people living in the Pavlodar region depends on a number of factors, like marital status and smoking. Age, profession and ethnicity do not affect dyslipidemia.
