ANALYSIS OF HEALTH LITERACY OF THE POPULATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN
Introduction: Health literacy is an important direction for the development of public health and public health policy. Studies in many countries have shown that low health literacy negatively affects health, health and illness-related behaviors, and the use of health resources.
The aim: to study the literacy of the population of the Republic of Kazakhstan in accessing, understanding, evaluating and applying health-related information in health care, disease prevention and health promotion
Materials and methods: cross-sectional (cross-sectional) study involving 3000 respondents living in Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, Aktobe and Ust-Kamenogorsk. The international questionnaire HLS-Q22 was used to collect data.
Results: A study was conducted to study general health literacy among 3,000 people of the Republic of Kazakhstan. A significant part of the respondents most of all experience difficulties when it is necessary to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different treatment options - 41.4% (the total indicator of answer options "very difficult" and "difficult"), to find information on how to cope with mental health problems - 36, 3%, assess the reliability of information from the media on health risks - 35.3%. The most difficult thing is to search for this information for residents of Shymkent - 24.8%, Aktobe - 21.8%, Ust-Kamenogorsk - 20.3%, Astana - 19.4%, the least difficulty in finding information among residents of Almaty - 13.9%.
Conclusions: The population's health literacy index is 75.32, which corresponds to a “sufficient” level. When considering the categorical values of literacy, it is important to note that 16.2% of respondents have an “insufficient” level of literacy, and 14.9% have a “problematic” level. Activities aimed at improving health literacy levels should be targeted at these 31.1% of respondents with “insufficient and problematic” levels of literacy.
