AWARENESS EAST KAZAKHSTAN REGION POPULATION ABOUT BREAST CANCER
Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common among women and is the leading cause of death in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Raising awareness about breast cancer is especially important to help at-risk women seek medical care for the disease. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively study the level of knowledge of women in the East Kazakhstan region about the risk factors for developing breast cancer, barriers and attitudes towards them.
Materials and Methodology: This population-based cross-sectional study administered the breast cancer awareness scale to 767 women. Samples were selected in rural and urban combinations from three provinces by stratified random sampling. All data were collated and subject to quality assurance. The data were reviewed and cleaned before they were analyzed. Data were collected followed organizational safeguarding policies including encrypted storge and anonymous analysis. Descriptive statistics (frequency) and chi-squared tests were performed to determine any associations between categorical dependents and predictors. Statistical significance was established at alpha −0.05. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26.0 (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA).
Results: Breast cancer was diagnosed in 14% of the respondents' relatives who participated in the study. More than 40% of respondents indicated insufficient knowledge about breast cancer risk factors. 15.0% of the participants answered that they do not know the methods of self-examination of the breast, and 25.4%, if they do know, they do not conduct it.
Conclusion: Urban women had a poorer level of knowledge of breast cancer risk factors compared to women living in more rural areas. The result of this study may reflect inadequate breast cancer awareness campaigns or a lack of breast cancer awareness campaigns. These findings suggest that additional education programs aiming to increase awareness and educate the public are needed.
