Введение: В статье представлены, теории развития атеросклероза и современные взгляды на роль воспаления в атерогенезе. На основании анализа современных книг, изданий, публикаций, мнений отечественных и зарубежных учёных в статье представлены воспалительная теория атеросклероза, роль цитокинов в развитии атеросклероза, взаимодействие липидной и воспалительной теории атерогенеза, формирование атеросклеротической бляшки. Фундаментальные исследования по молекулярной биологии, иммунологии, генетике значительно расширили понятие о патогенезе атеросклероза.
